The key difference between mech mods and regulated mods is how they operate. Regulated mods usually contain a chipset that lets you adjust the actual output power of the device to suit your setup. Mech mods work differently. A mechanical mod typically gives you nothing more than a fire button, which you use to heat the coil. In most cases, mech mods do not have a chipset, so they send the battery voltage directly to the coil without any regulation. That’s why you need a basic understanding of electrical engineering to use a mech mod correctly and safely. Terms like resistance, power, voltage and volts should be familiar to you before you operate a mechanical mod. If you’re new to vaping, it’s also important to know that “unregulated” generally means exactly what it sounds like: as described above, mechanical mods always pass the maximum available battery voltage on to the coil. If the coil resistance is not right, for example, it can seriously affect your vape and may even become dangerous. Mechanical mods generally do not have safety features such as overheat protection or overvoltage protection, because on regulated mods these functions depend on the built-in chipset. If, for example, a faulty coil is fired on a mech mod, the battery can be overloaded, which in the worst case may cause a dangerous situation due to venting or sparking. Because the fire button cannot be locked on some models, it is always advisable to carry the atomizer separately in a case during transport.

There is no chipset sitting between you and the experience when you press the fire button; a mech mod simply sends the battery’s available power to the coil without regulation.
