Coil Building and Resistance

Coil Building and Resistance

To make sure nobody runs into what happened to someone in the US two weeks ago – namely a tank that couldn’t cope with the resistance – there are a few simple solutions. Experienced coil builders use an ohm reader for this. Of course, you could also just measure your build on a regulated mod – but, as seasoned vapers keep pointing out, the device’s readout doesn’t always match the actual resistance.

I’ve had the same experience myself: I screw in stock coils from the very same manufacturer and get different resistance readings depending on the regulated device I’m using.

Since I don’t build my own coils, I don’t find that too worrying. But if these weren’t ready-made coils and the electronics weren’t handling the resistance for me, things could look very different.

Whether the electronics are measuring inaccurately or the coil manufacturer is being a bit optimistic with the numbers – I have no idea. To find out, I’d have to get myself an ohm reader. For people who don’t build their own coils, though, buying one doesn’t make much sense.

It’s a completely different story for coil builders! The point of an ohm reader is to know what you’re dealing with before you screw your atomizer onto a mod, whether it’s regulated or unregulated. Trying to save money there isn’t necessarily the right move. Besides, an ohm reader like this costs 20 francs.
