Vaping for Beginners - Coil Building - Spot and Fix Mistakes in New Builds
Want to try building your own coils? My tip: start with a tank that uses both stock coil heads and a deck for
These days, that doesn’t have to happen anymore - for one thing, rebuildables are now much cheaper than the handmade Bullis from back then, and for another, there are tanks with RBA options. In other words, tanks that work with regular coil heads but also include a rebuildable deck.
A tank like that will be available in our shop soon - the Smoktech TFV8 Big Baby Tank. The smaller tank from the same series is already available – the TFV8 Baby Tank. With the smaller model, however, you need to order the RBA deck separately; with the larger model, the rebuildable deck is included in the box when you buy it.
Common coil-building mistakes
If it tastes burnt, you’ve used too little cotton. The e-liquid basically sticks to the coils, and that gives you a very obvious burnt taste.
The fix is easy: use more cotton!
It tastes metallic, and really noticeably so. This can happen when the gap between the cotton and the coils is too large. The wire starts to glow and can develop a distinctly metallic taste.
The fix is simple: fit the coil more tightly!
Ewwwww... e-liquid in your mouth really isn’t tasty. The fix is pretty simple, though: you either need to wind the coil more tightly, or you’ve used too much cotton. In these cases, the e-liquid unfortunately flows upwards far too easily.
So there you have it: either too much cotton or too little - or the wire isn’t wrapped tightly enough, or there’s too much space between it and the cotton! But all of that can be fixed, and remember – nobody becomes a master coil builder overnight!
