Vaping for Beginners – Rebuilding Atomizers – Making a Clapton Coil

Put simply, a Clapton coil is a coil where a thinner wire is wrapped around a thicker core wire.

You’ll need 10 to 12 cm of wire for the core and around 20 cm for the wrap wire. Make a rough bend at one end of the core wire and clamp it into a drill or a vice, for example. Then feed the wrap wire in from the side and start winding it around the core. Keep the core wire straight with your left hand while you wind the wrap wire around it with your right hand. Alternatively, you can let the drill do the turning for you on its lowest speed setting. Make sure the wrap wire is wound evenly around the core, with each turn sitting neatly next to the last. Then bend the wire over again and remove it from the drill or vice.

This finished Clapton wire is then wrapped around a nail or, using a coil jig in your preferred diameter, just like a standard coil – and your coil is ready.

The advantage of Clapton coils is that their larger surface area gives your e-liquid a noticeably more intense flavour.

You can also pre-wrap the wire combination for Clapton coils by the metre.

And to give you a better visual idea, here’s a YouTube tutorial video by Teddy.
If that sounds like too much hassle, you can also buy premade coils here.

And next week, we’ll share tips on how to spot issues with new coils and how to fix them.
