Withdrawal Symptoms III – Vaping for Beginners

Caramelised sugar, combined with ammonia, is said to convert into acetaldehyde and work as an MAO inhibitor. The idea is to inhibit the breakdown of adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin. Put simply, you feel more at ease in your own skin.

So if this MAO inhibitor from cigarettes suddenly drops away, it can even lead to depression.

That’s the theory, at least. Whether the industry deliberately creates this chemical effect in cigarettes or whether it’s more of a coincidence is anyone’s guess. In reality, the sugar is used to make the tobacco more pleasant to smoke.

However, when cigarettes burn, around 1,200 different substances are produced, so if you suddenly feel lousy, another toxin could also be to blame. What should you do if you start feeling unwell? Personally, as a very heavy smoker, I didn’t have any problems with this — but I did have a little trick: I didn’t ban myself from having cigarettes.

In the morning, I always smoked one, even though after three days it tasted like straw. No big deal: if it doesn’t taste good, you don’t smoke it! But to get to that point, you have to get through five days (some people say three) with vaping and just two cigarettes. On the first day, you’re not exactly thrilled about it; from the second day it already gets much easier, and by the fifth day cigarettes don’t really taste good anymore.

With this one- to two-cigarette trick, I never experienced depression. But people are different: for one person the trick may help, for another it won’t do a thing, and someone else wants to go all in and drop straight to zero overnight. Everyone really has to decide that for themselves.

What should you do if you become depressed? Simple: go to the doctor. But be careful — swapping smoking for little pink pills isn’t a solution either! Maybe a calming tea or 10 drops of valerian will do the trick. The latter definitely helps if you suddenly become irritable or even aggressive. If you’re irritable, your nicotine strength may simply be too low. In that case, just try an e-liquid with a higher nicotine strength.

Heads up! Low mood or aggression can happen, but it doesn’t have to. Still, there are people who may react this way. That’s why it shouldn’t be swept under the rug.

Next week, we’ll look at how you should actually make the switch.
