Mix Your Own E-Liquid – Bases and Flavour Concentrates - Vaping Abbreviations, Tips and Tricks Part XIII

You can buy PG and VG ready-mixed as a vape base, or buy PG and VG separately and mix your preferred ratio yourself! Important: the higher the VG content in your e-liquid, the more likely you are to need to add sterilised water. Don’t add more than 10 percent – to be safe, start by testing how much water your mix actually needs.

VG-heavy e-liquids have a milder flavour. PG carries flavour really well, so don’t be surprised if you need a little more flavour concentrate in high-VG mixes.

If you want nicotine in your e-liquid, you’ll need to source it from an EU country. The sale of nicotine is prohibited in Switzerland. Nicotine is available in different concentrations, which you simply dilute down to your desired nicotine strength!

If young children live in your house or flat, only mix when they’re not at home or are already asleep. All those little bottles are incredibly appealing to small children. But e-liquids and some additives can cause poisoning or allergic reactions through skin contact in young children. This applies especially to nicotine. Flavourings can also smell delicious to kids and definitely don’t belong anywhere near a child’s mouth.

Next, you’ll need flavour concentrates, possibly a sweetener made specifically for e-liquids (never use sugar, liquid aspartame or anything similar), and we’ll cover menthol crystals in a separate post.

Most suppliers of e-liquid flavour concentrates state the recommended dosage for each flavour. However, these are only guidelines – everyone’s taste is different. If you don’t fancy doing the maths yourself, you’ll find an e-liquid calculator here. The calculator is also available as a smartphone app.

Next week, we’ll take a look at a few recipes.
