Back and Forth – 2016 in Review
Do you drink a lot of coffee? I drink it by the litre, and I have for as long as I can remember. For decades, caffeine was demonised – and since 2015 it’s been official: up to five cups of coffee a day can actually be healthy!
In the past, anyone with heart problems was told to avoid coffee, even though coffee may actually help protect the heart. And for years we’ve been told that nicotine is the devil’s work – and, by extension, so is vaping if you vape with nicotine. Wrong, says the RSPH, the Royal Society for Public Health in England. Nicotine is no more harmful than caffeine; the real harm comes from the combustion process in cigarettes. Meanwhile, the German Cancer Research Center is having a field day. Vaping is apparently downright evil. Of course vaping isn’t healthy, but compared with traditional cigarettes it is many times less harmful.
If the choice is between vaping and not smoking – which do you think is healthier? And why can’t even the Cancer Research Center show a little restraint? You simply can’t ban everything that might cause cancer. In the end, everyone has to decide for themselves what level of risk they’re willing to take.
The truth is, there’s only one thing we really know – nobody gets out of life alive, and plenty of other things in our everyday lives can also trigger cancer – including something as basic as our own genes.
