Damiana, also known by its scientific name Turnera diffusa, belongs to the genus of saffron mallow, which is a member of the passion flower family. It is native to Mexico, tropical areas of America, Asia and Africa. The plant was introduced to Europe only in the 19th century. A damiana shrub can grow up to two meters tall and the leaves contain various active ingredients from thymol to cineol, cadins, arbutin, damianin, p-cymene, tannin and caffeine.
There are traditions that the Mayans, as well as later the Spanish, used damiana as a remedy for coughs, respiratory diseases, asthma, diabetes, bladder weaknesses and menstrual disorders, likewise it was used as an aphrodisiac. As a tonic, damiana is said to affect the nervous and endocrine systems. Furthermore, because of its caffeine content, damiana was used as a source of energy.
When smoked with damiana, it is said to have a relaxing effect and the smell is pleasantly sweet, because of the aphrodisiac effect, it is also often used as a component of love incenses. The herb can also be enjoyed as a tea, for which the leaves are poured over with hot water and left to infuse for some time. For vaporizing, a temperature between 150 °C and 175 °C is recommended.
